Sure, there are a few small-volume synthetic oil brands out there in the market. Most of them are excellent products that are superior to petroleum oils, which has naturally earned them a small but loyal following. However, they don’t claim 25k mile drain intervals, they don’t offer high-performance filtration products, and they don’t warrant their product performance.

And on performance, you may be hard pressed to find actual ASTM test data on those other synthetic lubrication products unless AMSOIL provides the data. Why? One reason is because their formulations and/or additive-package-components are 5 to 30 years old. Or they use cheap, detrimental gimmicks like adding “Moly” to engine oil, as a marketing substitute for true technical performance. Q:  BUT, how can you know that AMSOIL’s test data is honest and true?

Great question. Easy answer. In addition to printed brochures and test-data reports, AMSOIL has often included the ASTM data right on product labels and packaging boxes listing the major brands by name on the charts (rather than “competitor A, B, C”). AMSOIL has been paying certified independent labs to do those tests for DECADES, and the published data is prosecutable as fraud and/or false-advertising if it’s false, and AMSOIL’s competition also does regular product testing. Yet for over 30 years no-one has EVER challenged the accuracy of AMSOIL’s data. Instead, AMSOIL’s competitors don’t publish their test results, and don’t discuss their performance compared to AMSOIL products…

even when Mobil 1 was asked for test data comparing Mobil 1 to Amsoil, they avoided answering the question.  Who knows how many thousands of times they have been asked, but since October 16, 2006, the best public response they can offer is to distract the question with data showing how they perform against petroleum oils?

We think that’s a revealing reality-check. Don’t you?

 

Q:  BUT, didn’t AMSOIL invent these tests?

Absolutely not. (LOL!) AMSOIL regularly publishes standard SAE/ASTM/API test data, but because very few lubrication companies publish any performance test data besides AMSOIL, some people assume that AMSOIL invented the very ASTM tests which are used globally by the entire lubrication industry.  The deafening silence of the petroleum lubrication industry about their actual ASTM-tested product performance is ridiculous!

(AMSOIL did invent and publish a “pound-out test” for heavy-equipment offroad grease, because there was no available ASTM test that addressed a way to assess the grease pound-out performance that is needed so badly in off-road construction equipment such as bulldozers, backhoes and loaders.)

 

Q:  Where do ASTM tests come from?

These tests are the lubrication industry’s standard performance tests, which have been painstakingly developed over decades by the ASTM through the cooperation of the three governing engineering bodies: the ASTM (formerly the American Society for Testing and Materials), the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and the American Petroleum Institute (API). The first two are worldwide engineering societies, and the third is mainly made up of engineers from the big international petroleum companies. The API also offers oil manufacturers an optional Trademarked-symbol system to have oil performance Certified by the ASTM tests to the minimum SAE requirements, but the tests are still performed by independent labs.

The SAE is made up mainly of automotive/truck OEM engineers, and they established the Service Grades as the way for OEMs to clearly define the minimum lubrication performance that’s required for them to avoid warranty failures and/or angry customers.

The ASTM tests themselves are used not only to determine if performance is adequate to meet the SAE Service Grades, but to measure that performance.  They were devised and refined in order to get accurate indicators of lubricant performance in “real world” use.  They are the same ASTM tests that the API and other international companies use, and all ASTM tests have been “standardized” so that the measurements will be accurately duplicated anywhere in the world by any laboratory that follows the test protocols using calibrated equipment.  So the measurement data from the ASTM tests are quite valuable in developing and identifying high performance lubrication characteristics.

What about real performance in real vehicles?

That’s what it’s all about! Imagine this real-life result: you have a new 1999 Chevy Express van that you own and drive for expedited-delivery hauling of up to 3500 lb loads, and with 68,000 miles on it you change all the drivetrain fluids and lubricants over to AMSOIL and go to 25,000 mile oil changes and 150,000 mile transmission ATF fluid changes. AMSOIL Lubricants Proven the Best Synthetic Oils !

AMSOIL is “The First in Synthetics” and also the first in quality, protection and performance. That trademark is enlightening, because the U.S. Patent and Trademark Officials stated that by claiming that AMSOIL was the first historically, that AMSOIL was also insinuating to be the best (or #1/first) from a quality or performance standpoint. On that basis, they planned to deny granting the trademark.  But AMSOIL showed the government officials comparison documentation and test-data backing up the claim that AMSOIL was also the best.

The Patent Office reviewed and agreed with the data.  So the process went to the next step, and every other oil company in the world was given the chance to object because AMSOIL had applied for trademark rights to “The First in Synthetics”.  Yet after the government officials notified all other oil manufacturers that AMSOIL was claiming to be the best oil, and waiting 90 days, not a single competitor had objected!  Not a peep from any of them!  I can guarantee you that if any of these competitors and major oil companies had a product better than AMSOIL, they would have objected.

In fact, Mr. A.J. Amatuzio, founder, President and CEO of AMSOIL states that he often hears other companies ad slogans stating that their products are the best. They are not.

Mobil 1 has run the tag line for their advertising “nothing outperforms Mobil 1”.

A.J. Amatuzio states that he knows a company that does make products that outperform Mobil 1: “And you know which company that is. Mobil makes a very good oil, but I am here to tell you that that it does not outperform AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oils. They can come out with advertising buzz words to market their oils, but in the final analysis, buzz words don’t add one thing to their products’ performance. The only reason that AMSOIL has continued to grow and prosper competing with large corporations like Mobil is that AMSOIL products have consistently performed better.”

Take a look at the AMSOIL vs. Mobil 1 test results in the global standard ASTM lubrication tests that all oil manufacturers and OEM’s use. These are independent certified lab test results performed by an ASTM (American Society of Testing and Materials) accredited test laboratory.   Now, after reading these test results do you still believe Mobil’s tag line “nothing outperforms Mobil 1”? The data certainly doesn’t show that, and we can also guarantee you that if this published data was not 100% accurate that Mobil’s attorneys would certainly be acting.

In fact, so many people wonder what Mobil 1 has to say about AMSOIL’s long history of published performance data that Exxon-Mobil’s official website devotes a complete webpage to a user’s direct question and request for data, asking whether Mobil 1 or Amsoil is a better oil. They published this frequent question on their own website with a dedicated page, and optimized that page for “Amsoil” search traffic.  The Mobil 1 user, Greg Galbreath, closes with this plea in 2006:

“AMSOIL claims of 25,000 miles with fleet testing gets me thinking maybe I should change to AMSOIL. Your honest reply citing professional standards used would be appreciated by many of the public (i.e., ASTM). I really would like to know who has the best protection and why. Your reply is greatly appreciated.

Isn’t his request pointed and clear?  It is used by Exxon-Mobil to represent probably thousands of similar questions they have received.  But notice and consider their response, carefully.  Their 4-sentance marketing answer in 2006 completely avoids Greg’s question, links to a taxicab fleet video talking about how much better Mobil 1 is than regular petroleum oil, and gives no comparative data for AMSOIL, at all.  None. Zero. And a November 2015 search on their website shows that there is still no other information on AMSOIL.

Why the marketing sleight-of-hand?  Why would Exxon-Mobil have avoided answering this important and frequent decades-old question, and why would they not legally challenge AMSOIL for any of the decades of dozens of boldly published ASTM test results, unless of course… Amsoil’s published data is true?

The logically inescapable conclusion:

Since AMSOIL’s test data is totally accurate and irrefutable, and Exxon-Mobil knows it and has verified it with their own testing, and since they are unwilling to create a better-performing product which could actually compete against AMSOIL… a marketing bait-and-switch ploy is the best response they can create.

Did you know that average petroleum motor oils have a much lower film strength than synthetic motor oils?  In fact, the general rule of thumb in lubrication engineering is that synthetic base-stocks have seven to ten times the shear strength of petroleum oils.  So in “dry start” conditions and drivetrain shock-loads (like pot-holes and railroad tracks), synthetics will automatically ensure far less wear damage in everyday driving.

AMSOIL synthetic oil does not break down, shear apart or lose viscosity under heat and stress. Petroleum motor oil easily breaks down under heat and stress and leaves carbon, varnish and sludge deposits in your engine, allowing your critical engine components to wear much more rapidly. In a Lubricants World Magazine interview the president of Jiffy Lube International (owned by Penzoil-Quaker State), Marc Graham states that if they can get customers to shorten their drain intervals by 100 miles it would mean an additional $20 million in revenue for the company per year and if they can get consumers to do one more oil change per year it would mean $294 million for the oil change alone and $441 million in revenue when they include ancillary products and services that go along with the oil change. In fact, Graham openly admits that the bottom line is profits. This is why the quick-lube industry pushes 3,000 mile oil changes. The shorter the drain interval, the more money Jiffy Lube and Penzoil-Quaker State make. With statements like this it sure appears that they don’t care about your vehicle and selling you a quality extended-drain-interval synthetic like AMSOIL. All they want is to see the same customer over and over again, as often as possible!

Isn’t it about time you learned the truth??

What about racing with AMSOIL synthetic lubricants?

In many racing segments, like CORR, Snocross, Champ Boat Offshore and Motocross, Amsoil-lubricated engines dominate.  Consider these famous racers:

We’ve not found a single one that even comes close to providing the wear protection that AMSOIL synthetic oil does!  After the last decade of opportunities with many new “synthetics” and some real synthetics introduced to the market, even the latest independent ASTM testing in the now-crowded 5W-30 synthetic engine oil market still shows weak competition against AMSOIL’s superior performance.

This superior performance is NOT new.  AMSOIL has a long testing history across both consumer and racing products.  For example, the graphs on the back of AMSOIL’s Series 2000 20W-50 Racing Oil or the Series 2000 0W-30 Severe Service Oil proclaimed these results to the world:

  • The 20W-50 Mobil 1 Tri-Synthetic leaves a wear scar over 2 times that of the AMSOIL (0.440 mm for AMSOIL vs. 0.922 mm for Mobil 1)!
  • Same thing goes for Havoline Formula 3 (0.713), Valvoline Synthetic (0.741), Castrol Syntec (0.757), Quaker State (0.790, synthetic blend).
  • The Mobil 1 Tri-Synthetic 0W-30 leaves a wear scar over 1.6 times that of the AMSOIL 0W-30 (0.373 for AMSOIL and 0.607 for Mobil 1)!
  • Same thing goes for Penzoil 5W-30 at 0.540, Castrol Syntec 5W-50 at 0.576, Mobil 1 5W-30 at 0.589 and Quaker State 4×4 10W-30 Synthetic Blend at 0.595.

Mobil Supersyn was a big marketing push, a new high-performance oil, yet the independent lab test data showed that Mobil Supersyn did not compare to AMSOIL’s extended drain interval 25,000 mile/1-year oil.  The test data was as follows for AMSOIL 5W-30 vs. Mobil Supersyn 5W-30:

Mobil will not recommend or guarantee 25k mile/1-year drain intervals like AMSOIL 0W-30, 5W-30, 10W-30 or 10W-40 Synthetic Motor Oils. No-where on the Mobil bottle or the Exxon-Mobil website does Mobil 1 claim 25,000 miles/1-year.

AMSOIL is proven to be the best by the standardized industry tests! AMSOIL was, and still is, the “First in Synthetics”. All other synthetic motor oils came later. This is a lubrication-industry fact that NO oil company will dispute. The bare truth is that up until about 2001, these petroleum manufacturers never even offered a synthetic (except Mobil1). In fact, they they had always stayed busy trying to debunk the benefits of synthetics to the average consumer! Now, technology, competition and consumer demand has forced every major oil manufacturer to have a synthetic, so they are now claiming the same benefits that at one time they were trying to debunk. They also claim their re-defined petroleum “synthetics” offer true synthetic performance – claims which are still considered fraud in most countries outside the United States. Yet not a single one comes close to offering the protection and performance that AMSOIL does – and they don’t want to.

In fact, most new “synthetics” now on the market are merely Group III hydrocracked oils – the oil-drilling “version” of a synthetic. And “synthetic blends” are oils that include enough Group III base-stock to enable passing the required SAE Service Grade tests with old Group II petroleum oil.  For example, Castrol Syntec isn’t even a 100% pure Group 4 synthetic! CASTROL AND MOBIL GO TO COURT TO BATTLE IT OUT:

Mobil accused Castrol of false advertising after Castrol reformulated its’ synthetic by substituting other basestocks in place of its synthetic polyalphaolefins (PAO’s). Castrol Syntec is now a hydrocracked oil, but still claims to be a “full synthetic”.

That’s right, Castrol replaced Syntec’s PAO synthetic base stock with a hydroisomerized “Group III” petroleum base stock.

Hydrocracking, as it’s called, is the highest level of petroleum refining. Syntec isn’t even a true synthetic yet Castrol ended up winning the battle when the National Advertising Division of the Council of Better Business Bureaus ruled that Castrol could still market its oil as “synthetic” despite their new formulation and huge new profit margin.

How can they do that? Basically, the Big Oil companies advised the BBB that the legal definition of synthetics should be “expanded” to include Group III hydroprocessed petroleum oil. That’s illegal in every country except the United States. But this high profile case was decided against consumers because synthetics are recognized as the market’s best hope for growth in profit margins. Synthetic oil sales growth has outpaced petroleum oil sales by a wide margin and the gap continues to widen every year. Consumers were getting smarter and demanding the best for their vehicles, so the petroleum industry agreed on the classic “bait and switch” tactic by quietly redefining “synthetic oil”! Although this deception is unethical, it’s unfortunately legal, and much too profitable for the petroleum companies to permit it being corrected.

Additionally, soon after Castrol won this battle, several other major oil companies jumped in and came up with hydroprocessed motor oils of their own and labeled these products to be “100% synthetic”, when they are still primarily Group III hydroprocessed petroleum oils!
