Synthetic Oil FAQ’s (Frequently Asked Questions)
about AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oils
(Now 18 Questions… and counting)
1. How Long Have AMSOIL lubricants been on the market?
Fighter pilot and squadron commander Al Amatuzio had been watching the performance gains and reduced maintenance from improved formulations of jet engine oil. In the early 1960’s he grew passionate about his crazy dream to adapt the chemical engineering technologies of synthetic jet engine oil, into the automotive market, and started his own company to develop and sell his new AMZOIL synthetic engine oil. Following years of testing and development, AMSOIL introduced the first synthetic motor oil with an API (American Petroleum Institute) Service Classification in 1972 – almost 45 years ago.
From its’ beginning AMSOIL recommended extended drain intervals up to 25,000 miles or one year. That only seemed crazy because no-one else had ever brought jet-engine lubrication technology into the automotive market. And although Mobil 1 was later introduced by a petroleum drilling/refining company as a means to exert market control and pretend to be the synthetic oil leader, it took years for any other synthetic competitors to appear in the market.
Since then, AMSOIL has varied and expanded its product line, and has introduced the first synthetic lubricant on the market in nearly every major product category – from greases to hydraulic fluid to 2-cycle oils. (See the list at the bottom of this page.) Each time AMSOIL looked at another lubrication segment, they found technical stagnation with a dismal lack of performance and value, and they felt compelled to deliver vastly superior products – expanding into 2-cycle, marine, gear lubes, transmissions, greases, and power steering. As you might expect, this same dynamic is what later drove AMSOIL to design and deliver superior performance and value in areas including fuel additives, firearms lubricant and brake fluid.
AMSOIL has also aggressively reformulated every 2-10 years, whenever technical advances enable them to improve the performance of their lubricants. The engineered beauty for vehicle owners is that this superior, more expensive AMSOIL technology is typically cheaper to use. (See #18 below.)

2. What are AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oils?
AMSOIL Synthetic Lubricants are fuel efficient, extended life lubricants which are chemically constructed in Superior, Wisconsin from select synthetic base stocks and special purpose additives. Although AMSOIL is often mistakenly grouped in the “blender” class simply because they do not drill, pump or refine crude-oil, they are not a petroleum-style “oil blender”. AMSOIL is a synthetic lubricant manufacturer who buys “feed-stocks” and many different raw materials to chemically build proprietary “base stock” oils which are uniformly ideal lubrication-molecule structures: they make their own full-synthetic base-stock oils. Then AMSOIL assembles their complex additives to blend and package in the finished oils, all in their Superior, Wisconsin manufacturing and R&D facility. AMSOIL originally concentrated on designing and later also manufacturing full PAO (Group IV) synthetic base-stock oils. Then they migrated their proprietary formulations to include some Group V synthetic oil structures as they continued their pursuit of ever-higher performance. (More details in how to pick the best engine oil.)
AMSOIL lubricants provide major improved overall performance benefits beyond conventional petroleum oils, and substantial advantages over other synthetic oils including very long drain intervals that typically make them the cheapest of any oil to use on the basis of annual cost. But beware – due to legal wrangling and an agreement that many feel is a brazenly unethical deception of consumers, in the USA a “synthetic” can now be a cross-dressing petroleum oil! To be clear, most “full synthetics” now on United States store shelves aren’t a true synthetic in the traditional sense and under previous legal agreements, and would still be considered fraudulent advertising in nearly every other country in the free world. more info
3. Will AMSOIL Motor Oils increase gas mileage?
Absolutely. Tighter government regulations and increases in engine manufacturers’ demands are calling for more fuel efficient lubricants. AMSOIL Motor Oils reduce friction and drag better than petroleum oils and other synthetic oils, resulting in significant fuel economy increases. In a recent 1.2 million mile demonstration, AMSOIL Lubricants showed a 4.5% increase in fleet gas mileage. This published diesel test measured a 6.54% improvement. Other tests have shown increases as much as 15% under certain weather and driving conditions.
But new AMSOIL products continue to increase performance, further reducing friction and improving fuel economy. One of my friends using AMSOIL’s 35,000 mile predecessor to today’s 0W-30 Signature Series Synthetic Motor Oil, Phillip Southworth, got a 20% fuel economy improvement with his 1999 Oldsmobile Silhouette van (85,000 miles on it) – by changing only engine oil – netting over a $600 annual fuel savings for just $100/yr in oil and filters. How Amsoil increases fuel economy.
Fuel economy improvements typically range from 2%, up to 15% when changing all the drivetrain lubricants (engine, transmission, differential, power steering). Yet because every vehicle is different, as are driving habits and conditions including previous engine oils used, it is nearly impossible to accurately project an actual increase on your vehicle. However, if you are the type of driver who tracks your fuel economy, it would be unusual if you did not see an improvement in fuel economy. If you do NOT see an improvement, it is probably due to vehicle problems or other factors degrading your fuel economy, and once those issues are corrected you will see MPG improvements: e-mail or call us and we will try to assist you.
4. Can AMSOIL Motor Oils be used in any engine?
Certainly, AMSOIL Motor Oils may be used in any mechanically sound gasoline or diesel fueled engine. Basically, AMSOIL synthetic engine oils are an excellent, superior choice for use in any vehicle’s engine. In fact, synthetic oils are one of the greatest secrets of the automotive industry. (And no, AMSOIL synthetic oils don’t cause gasket leaks or oil-seal leaks.) There is a special page here to answer your questions on converting to AMSOIL.
AMSOIL’s Signature Series Synthetic Engine Oils are engineered and warrantied for protection that meets or exceeds the most demanding specifications for nearly every production automobile imported to North America, even if you drive a Porsche Panamera with the optional monster twin-turbo 4.8L V8 under the hood.
5. Will AMSOIL Motor Oils void the warranty of a new vehicle?
Absolutely not! Manufacturers’ warranties are based on the use of oils meeting specific API Service Classifications, for example SJ/CF. (And no, there are no engine oil seal or gasket compatibility problems with AMSOIL.)
AMSOIL lubricants exceed the current minimum API Service requirements and, thus, are perfectly suited for use in any new vehicle without affecting the validity of the new vehicle warranty. API Trademark Licensing – or “certification” – is a completely different issue than meeting or dramatically exceeding API Service Classification performance, because it is a trademarked labeling program that places far higher cost burdens on true synthetic lubricants, and it only licenses certification to mediocre minimum performance standards, and it excludes maximum-performance products from being certified.
You are free to take full advantage of the more than 75% reduction in wear rates and 2-10% fuel economy improvements provided by AMSOIL synthetic engine oil and nanofiber oil filter, without extending your oil-change interval beyond the OEM 5,000-10,000 mile recommendations. However, to save throwing away your time and money with needless extra AMSOIL oil changes just to pad a dealer’s pocket, I do suggest that you follow Amsoil’s extended drain intervals for your vehicle. AMSOIL’s Signature Series oils deliver 15,000 miles minimum, under severe service conditions. (Please don’t fall for the 3,000 mile oil-change fraud at a time when GM is calling 30,000 mile intervals achievable!)
And extended drain intervals are not a warranty problem. AMSOIL has never been found to cause any warranty failure, and happily continues to dispel customer’s concerns with the full AMSOIL warranty which has been used on a couple of occasions over the last 45 years to cover customer’s repair costs while the OEM pulled their warranty head out of the sand. AMSOIL says it well:
“Furthermore, the practice of extending oil drain intervals does not void warranties. Original equipment manufacturers pay or deny warranty claims based on the findings of failure analysis. To affect the vehicle warranty, the lubricant must be directly responsible for the failure. If the oil didn’t cause the problem the warranty cannot be voided, regardless of brand or length of time in use.”
6. Why don’t the auto manufacturers install AMSOIL at the factory?
Part of it is a matter of practical decisions. For example, when they have a better design option that costs or weighs more, but isn’t needed to reliably get past the warranty period, OEM’s go cheaper/lighter because they have to be competitive. In a similar way, because AMSOIL would be a more expensive factory fill which (in most cases) doesn’t offer OEM’s any longterm advantages, the decision is clear.
Then there is the matter of product lifecycle and future sales. In a nutshell, the auto manufacturers’ and your “friendly” dealer actually want your vehicle to wear out and have a finite life within a specific targeted period of time so you have to buy a new one, or come to the dealer for expensive repairs. (This isn’t speculation: we’re engineers in the automotive industry – this is standard OEM practice that is built into the corporate business plan and the engineering decisions for targeted lifespans of systems!)
Keeping this in mind, AMSOIL Motor Oils, ATF and gear lubes have been proven for over 40 years and hundreds of millions of miles to significantly extend the life of a vehicles engine, transmission, axles, gears and bearings. (Hard to believe? If you read our complete article The Auto Industry’s Best Kept Secret and peruse the rest of this website, many realities will come into focus.) Such high performance lubrication is perceived as a “cat that can’t be put back in the bag” which potentially could lead to a future of reduced sales of parts and vehicles, that risk serves as an OEM incentive to not use or acknowledge AMSOIL
The auto manufacturers and dealerships are NOT looking out for your best interests, but THEIR best profits – AT YOUR EXPENSE! This is human nature.
But there are other, deeper, issues as well. The OEM’s work closely with the petroleum companies on issues such as fuel quality and fuel concerns including bio-fuels, and the petro companies also provide training environments/materials for OEM engineers as well as dealership mechanics. So this long history of trustful cooperation extends beyond fuel into lubrication and makes OEM engineers somewhat of a captive industry audience for the petroleum oil companies. Synthetic oil companies do not have this synergistic historical relationship, and have long been undermined to OEM’s by the petro-company agendas who can easily target the few key OEM engineers who make the decisions, to cultivate a strong negative impression of synthetic lubricants or at least of viability for OEM use.
As you might image, there is actually a huge weight of history, relationships, auto dealerships and international servicing-market availability that have set the lubrication trajectory within the OEM’s: for a giant ship to break from the standard shipping lanes and chart a different course, through different waters, to a different port, there are a huge numbers of issues, questions, logistics and commercial business concerns to address. In the same way, for OEM’s to install high-performance synthetics as factory fill and recommend/require them for warranty coverage is a HUGE undertaking that would require purposeful intent and substantial redirection of engineering talent and dealership training.
Some rare companies, such as Erik Buell Racing, DID the design work to take maximum advantage of AMSOIL and recommend AMSOIL, but most long-existing large companies are not interested in investing their leadership, engineering and dealership time in pursuit of this direction.
7. Are AMSOIL Motor Oils All-Season Motor Oils?
Yes. Synthetic oils are made to protect and perform better than petroleum oils at both high and low temperature extremes. That’s why every jet engine in global history has ALWAYS been lubricated with synthetic oil. AMSOIL Motor Oils have extremely low pour points and flow readily at extremely low temperatures for easier winter starting and reduced engine wear. At high temperatures, no conventional motor oil can compare to the overall protection AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oils provide. That’s extremely important for today’s turbocharged GDI and small, non-turbocharged engines!
The engine oil sludge problem that affected over 4.5 million OEM engines made from about 1997 to 2004, in which petroleum oil sludge could kill an engine in as little as 30,000 miles, highlighted just how difficult it is to raise engine and oil operating temperatures using petroleum oils. AMSOIL users, although they never suspected it during that time, were well protected regardless of the engine design: after thousands of engine replacements and rebuilds, when new API/SAE service grades were finally rolled out to deal with the harsher engine environments, it turned out that AMSOIL had already exceeded the new standards… all along.
8. Should Oil Additives or After Market Products be added to AMSOIL Motor Oils?
No ! If added to AMSOIL’s high-performance synthetic engine oils, oil additives will always be detrimental by degrading the oil’s performance in your engine! It is a mistake to use a motor oil additive in an oil that is already formulated for the best performance in the world. AMSOIL Motor Oils are strenuously formulated and produced under the strictest Quality Control procedures to provide superior lubrication performance, and cannot be improved with ANY additive. You’ll almost never find independent laboratory test data that supports the claims of oil additives: they are either FRAUDS or they are designed to help mediocre petroleum oils. Click here for a detailed analysis on the deceptions of aftermarket oil additives…
Additionally, if you introduce an oil additive into a turbo-GDI (gas direct injection) engine, you may be setting yourself up for a very expensive repair or engine replacement which is not covered under warranty: these engines require specially formulated oils to avoid “super knock”, or Low Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI) damage, and any additive risks altering the delicate chemical balance which provides LSPI damage.
9. Are AMSOIL Motor Oils compatible with other motor oils?
Yes, AMSOIL Motor Oils are compatible with all other synthetic or petroleum motor oils. However, mixing AMSOIL motor oils with other oils will shorten the life expectancy and reduce the performance benefits. AMSOIL does not support extended drain intervals where oils have been mixed. Aftermarket oil additives are not recommended for use with AMSOIL motor oils.
There are three essential reasons which all work together.
- First, they are designed for maximum possible protection. All AMSOIL Signature Series Synthetic Motor Oil “base stocks” are made of specific purpose-built molecular structures whose character is to be highly resistant to the destructive effects of heat and shear stresses. They do not break down like petroleum oils because they are NOT petroleum oils, so they lack the huge variations in structures that can be readily broken apart or oxidized. Because an ideally designed synthetic lubrication molecule has vastly superior robustness, it naturally lasts far, far longer than a petroleum oil ever could.
- Second, to complement the high-performance base-stock oil, AMSOIL assembles the highest quality additive packages possible: more costly additives which are proven to retain their beneficial properties for a long time without breaking down, even under the worst possible conditions.
- Finally, AMSOIL’s EaO nanofiber oil filters remove over 98% of wear particles at a 15 micron level. SAE automotive research published in the 1980’s proved that a 70% wear-rate reduction would come from 15 micron absolute filtration, if it was ever made practical.
Together, this triple-crown of ultimate synthetic performance in base-stock, additives and filtration means that AMSOIL Motor Oils can provide far longer drain intervals than conventional lubricants, without compromising performance or protection. In fact, overall combined AMSOIL oil and Ea nanofiber filtration typically delivers wear rate reductions over 80%. Read the details of these and other secrets that enabled the Million Mile Van.
11. Will AMSOIL Motor Oils decrease oil consumption?
Yes. When used in mechanically sound engines, AMSOIL Motor Oils can reduce oil consumption, and they typically do. (“Volatility” tests measure the primary aspect of oil consumption. Additionally, AMSOIL often seals small oil-seal leaks.) Under test conditions, a reduction of as much as 42% was demonstrated for prolonged periods. And commonly, after a few hundred to several thousand miles of transitional time, a change to AMSOIL will ultimately mean lower oil consumption. However, this should not be taken to mean that AMSOIL Motor Oils are “cure-alls” for engines that consume oil because of mechanical problems.
12. Is there a recommended procedure for changing to AMSOIL Motor Oils?
There are no special requirements. However, in vehicles over 2 years old or those with more than 30,000 miles, the dissolving of accumulated engine sludge and varnish can deplete the AMSOIL additive package and shorten the drain interval needed for the second AMSOIL oil change. For that reason, we strongly advise using AMSOIL Engine Flush. This simple pre-oil-change step will ensure that the engine is clean and free of any accumulated contaminants which might have an effect on the service life of AMSOIL Motor Oils and filters. In all cases, it is good judgment to install a new AMSOIL Full-Flow Nanofiber Oil Filter (EaO) every time you change oil. This link gives detailed best-practice information on converting to AMSOIL engine oil.
13. Aren’t you just selling AMSOIL to make money?
No, I’m doing it to help people and businesses. I’m an automotive mechanical engineer and a former OEM headquarters senior engineer. I signed up as an AMSOIL Dealer mainly because people deserve to know the truth and save time and money with modern technology, and if I don’t tell them the truth as an automotive engineering professional… who will? In fact, 75% of AMSOIL Dealers become dealers because they have been so very impressed with AMSOIL products as customers, and they want to help educate other people and share the huge AMSOIL benefits.
It’s true that you can make good money selling AMSOIL. I’m quite willing to help anyone who’s interested in doing that, and I don’t turn away sales at all. But most of MY sales are at or below my dealer wholesale pricing: I tell people the secrets to cutting out the Dealer Retail Profit as Preferred Customers, and helping others become AMSOIL Dealers in what I believe is THE most qualified, experienced and beneficial AMSOIL dealer organization, and I hope that strongly makes the point that I’m trying to help people.
I spend precious family and sleep time to help people, on the side from my full-time engineering job. Why? Because I feel a professional and moral obligation as a Mechanical Engineer who spent nearly two decades in the automotive industry (including as a Senior Engineer in an OEM Headquarters). I know that you have very few knowledgeable, qualified and honest sources to find the TRUTH about lubrication and filtration technology and best-practice maintenance.
I recommend AMSOIL because they have continuously led the world in synthetic lubrication technologies, and have repeatedly proven with objective independent standardized testing that there are no better products on the market: other lubrication companies are completely unwilling or unable to make the same deep, long-term commitments to their products and customers that have shaped and defined the privately-owned American DNA of passionate excellence that has defined the AMSOIL company. 14. Which AMSOIL Oil Should I Use?
Sure, any AMSOIL motor oil will outperform competitive products, but “what is the best AMSOIL choice for MY application?” When you go to our vehicle oil and maintenance guide page and put in your vehicle, you see that AMSOIL typically offers three tiers of engine oil products:
- The OE line of AMSOIL oils is for people who want a superior quality oil but want a low-cost solution because they intend to keep a specific shorter oil-change interval habit or OEM recommendation such as 5,000 or 7,000 miles, typically using standard oil filters. These are API Starburst trademark-certified Group III “synthetics” that are designed to be inexpensive and deliver the maximum performance that API licensing restrictions will permit, including superior fuel economy.
- The XL line of oils is an upgrade for people who want to use the OEM’s oil-life-monitoring system, or want to change their oil at intervals up to 10,000 miles or 6 months using either standard filters or AMSOIL Ea oil filters. Because these synthetics exceed the limits of beneficial additives that the API has set to protect petroleum-oil marketing, they cannot be API certified. This is a certainty that you are getting superior performance that normal oils CANNOT provide. AMSOIL’s XL oils provide reduced wear, better fuel economy, better value, and longer protection than the OE oils.
DMT Technical and UltimateSyntheticOil recommend using AMSOIL’s EaO oil filters with XL oils, not only for the 70% wear-rate reduction from the nanofiber technology, but also because of the designed 1-year filter life. The binders used in standard oil filter media begin to break down from heat and chemicals after 6 months, and should not be used any longer than 7 months.
- The Signature Series line of AMSOIL oils represents the global pinnacle of engine oil technology. These AMSOIL oils provide the ultimate in reduced wear, improved fuel economy, maximum value, and longest protection – a combination which truly saves time and money in many ways.
Extensive historical testing, by independent labs to the standardized ASTM tests used by the entire lubrication industry, proves that AMSOIL is the lubrication gold standard of performance. Recently AMSOIL has begun to shift comparison testing from historically including petroleum oils (embarrassingly low performance compared to AMSOIL), to testing against competitive synthetic oils, such as this latest 5W-30 synthetic motor oil test study.AMSOIL’s Signature Series oils should always be used with AMSOIL’s EaO filters which are rated for 1 year and either 15,000 or 25,000 miles depending on the size of the filter. Over the mileage life, these nanofiber filters are less expensive than standard filters but provide a 70% wear-rate reduction. But you don’t have to use long drain intervals. It’s important to realize that although the long oil-drain intervals of AMSOIL Signature Series Synthetic oils are closely tied to the extremely superior performance of the oil designs, you are free to use whatever shorter oil change interval that you wish. These Signature Series oils deliver maximum protection, whether you change them at 10,000 miles, at the recommended Severe Service 15,000 mile interval, at the 25,000 mile normal/highway interval, or as recommended by oil sampling analysis. You will get ultimate performance and maximum protection at any yearly interval you choose – even if you only drive 5,000 miles a year.
15. What if my Mechanic or my quick-lube center says that synthetics aren’t good in my case, or that long drain intervals are going to damage my engine?
Whether this is your trusted mechanic talking, or a vehicle service center, it’s probably a case of ignorance rather than deception. Although they’ve had some training, they actually know very little, if anything, about the technical and engineering aspects of lubrication, filtration and oil analysis science. We suggest reading how to pick the best engine oil, for a full review of the different sources of oil information and what you should really rely on. Another valuable resource is our article addressing myths of synthetic engine oil compatibility with oil-seals and gaskets.
The fact is that very few people in the business of selling petroleum oil and repairing vehicles know the facts about the performance of true synthetic lubricants, because the petroleum companies and OEM’s deliberately DON’T educate them, and deliberately DO distract them away from thoughtful inquiries. Of those very few mechanical service professionals who do understand synthetic lubricants, fewer still have the knowledge, patience and character that it takes to explain to customers how to extend your drain intervals using AMSOIL technology.
In the quick lubes and service centers, they make profits by seeing you on a regular basis and don’t care about extending your vehicles’ life. We know this, for one, because we have talked to former quick-lube employees and manager-trainees who explained their disgust with a corporate climate of “ghosting” services: selling you things they didn’t do, like changing a fuel filter or differential oil. (Some television network stations have aired investigative reporting where nearly half of the quick-lubes they went to did NOT perform all the services they paid for!)
We also know this because we tried to get some of the quick lubes and dealership service centers to carry AMSOIL extended drain interval gas engine oil (25,000 miles/1-year). In rare cases they do see the big picture long-term business advantages and start offering AMSOIL. But the typical response is that they know the Signature Series AMSOIL products are excellent, but few customers ask for them, and they don’t want to offer them because then their customers won’t come back as often.
So AMSOIL specifically tailored a top-quality reduced mileage extended drain interval oil (the XL series of products) of 10,000 miles for gas engine vehicles for the quick lubes so they can keep customers coming back but still give them added convenience of extended drains intervals. In addition, they also added the OEM product line for customers who want to use a 6-month/7,000 mile or less interval. This has proven to be an excellent program for all involved.
That’s the short response. Here are some additional details:
In the automotive industry, engineers from many companies have tested AMSOIL lubricants and know how good they are. Many OEM automotive engineers even use AMSOIL technology in their own vehicles (the ones they buy and keep, rather than the lease-the-new-model program that OEM’s offer for employees that includes free oil changes). As OEM “insiders”, we strongly believe they will not recommend it in technical training or owner’s manuals for purely “political reasons” that all boil down to company profits. This explains why OEM mechanic training has been negative on true synthetic lubes for decades.
There is a corporate motive problem in the marketplace: oil companies need to sell large volumes of oil, and OEM engineers can tell you from personal experience that auto companies want your engine and powertrain to have somewhat of a finite life. Enough life so that you are a very satisfied and happy customer and will come back and buy another one, yet not so long that you won’t need to buy another vehicle for many years. So petroleum oil appears to perfectly accomplish the objectives of both the petroleum oil companies and the equipment OEM’s.
Yet AMSOIL has been proven for more than 40 years to prevent your vehicle from having a short 150,000 to 300,000 mile life. For example, I have an article about an AMSOIL user with 731,000 miles on his 1993 Ford Aerostar on the original engine and transmission. He was using AMSOIL from the beginning. This type of mileage is not uncommon when using AMSOIL synthetic lubricants. The Million Mile Van is a newer milestone that exceeded 1.2M miles, and our diesel page has several links covering big benefits in extended commercial vehicle life and dramatically extended engine rebuild intervals. So, what do you think would happen to sale of new OEM vehicles and repair parts if everybody used AMSOIL and got that much mileage on their vehicles?
I can assure you that OEM engineering managers know how to crunch the numbers. Sure, the auto companies would like to hear reports of 300-500k miles about one of their vehicles every few years — but not on a large scale. And I suspect they don’t advertise these cases because if too many consumers learn how easily it can be done, they fear it might build into an avalanche with major negative financial implications.
16. I WANT ONE MOTOR OIL that will work superbly for every 4-cycle engine at my house/farm/business , whether diesel or gasoline, backhoe or ATV, John Deere diesel tractor or a gasoline lawn tractor.
Is that a fantasy?
No. It’s fantasy with petroleum oils, but not with AMSOIL’s best synthetics. Some of AMSOIL’s diesel oils can provide superb multi-engine protection for you, because they are designed to exceed specifications for both gasoline and diesel engine applications and have the beefiest additive packages in the world. (By AMSOIL’s standards, of course no oil can optimally cover all of those bases, but a multi-engine AMSOIL solution will far outperform any mix of petroleum products that you could assemble.) For more detailed help in selecting the best oil for YOUR equipment mix, visit our Diesel and Fleet Page, and review how to pick the best engine oil.
17. What about Biodiesel fuels that are now available in my area? Is there any effect on AMSOIL engine oils?
Yes, there is. This is a largely untold problem which affects all diesel engine oils. If you are running on any biodiesel blend beyond B2, you cannot use AMSOIL’s extended drain intervals without oil analysis sampling. In fact, you typically need to run a shorter drain interval with ANY brand or type of oil. Additionally, biodiesel is very difficult for OEM’s to design for, since it commonly produces aggressive internal corrosion in various engine and engine-compartment components. So before running anything beyond a B2 (2% biofuel in petroleum diesel fuel), be certain that your specific vehicle model is designed and warranted for it. If not, you will certainly move toward expensive engine repairs.
18. AMSOIL seems expensive – how can I justify paying so much?
It only seems that way. For most people it’s a fairly easy choice once they consider all the actual costs and benefits on an annual basis, instead of per-oil-change. And of course, you’ll want to become a Preferred Customer through us, to save about 25% from retail while getting our free automotive-engineering support and advice. The bottom line is that AMSOIL really does save money. Now, this chart doesn’t include fuel savings or time savings, but consider this example to see what we mean when you buy at wholesale and have it shipped to your door (typically arrives in 2-4 business days):
